MSME Udyam Registration — Benefits, Eligibility and How to Register 2025

Udyam Registration (formerly known as MSME or Udyog Aadhaar Registration) is the official government registration for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises in India. Introduced in July 2020, it replaced the earlier Udyog Aadhaar system. Getting Udyam Registration unlocks a wide range of government benefits, subsidies and preferential treatment for your business. Here is everything you need to know.

MSME Classification (Updated 2020)

The revised MSME definition classifies enterprises based on investment in plant and machinery/equipment AND annual turnover:

  • Micro Enterprise: Investment up to ₹1 crore and turnover up to ₹5 crore
  • Small Enterprise: Investment up to ₹10 crore and turnover up to ₹50 crore
  • Medium Enterprise: Investment up to ₹50 crore and turnover up to ₹250 crore

Both criteria (investment AND turnover) must be met. If either exceeds the limit, the enterprise moves to the next higher category.

Key Benefits of Udyam Registration

  • Priority lending from banks at lower interest rates (Priority Sector Lending)
  • Collateral-free loans under CGTMSE (Credit Guarantee Fund Trust for MSMEs)
  • Protection against delayed payments (MSME buyers must pay within 45 days)
  • Concessions on electricity bills in many states
  • Preference in government procurement tenders
  • ISO certification reimbursement and other subsidies
  • Protection under the MSMED Act against buyer defaults
  • Easier access to MUDRA loans and other government schemes

Who Can Register?

Any enterprise engaged in manufacturing, trading or services — including sole proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, private limited companies, co-operative societies and Hindu Undivided Families (HUFs) — can register on the Udyam portal (udyamregistration.gov.in).

Documents Required

  • Aadhaar number of the proprietor/partner/director (mandatory)
  • PAN number of the enterprise (mandatory from April 2021)
  • GSTIN (if applicable)
  • Bank account details
  • Details of investment in plant and machinery and annual turnover

No physical documents need to be uploaded — the data is verified automatically from government databases (Aadhaar, PAN and GSTIN systems).

How to Register Online

Step 1: Visit udyamregistration.gov.in.

Step 2: Click "For New Entrepreneurs who are not Registered yet as MSME." Enter your Aadhaar number and PAN and validate via OTP.

Step 3: Fill in the enterprise details — name, type, address, bank details, NIC code for activity and investment/turnover figures.

Step 4: Submit the form. The Udyam Registration Certificate is generated immediately and sent to the registered email. There is no government fee for Udyam Registration.

Free and instant: Udyam Registration is completely free and the certificate is issued immediately. If you have an existing MSME/Udyog Aadhaar registration, you must migrate to Udyam by re-registering on the new portal. Contact SPOTON at +91 99614 11863 for assistance.
