The Import Export Code (IEC) is a 10-digit identification number mandatory for any business or individual wishing to import goods into India or export goods from India. Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) under the Ministry of Commerce, the IEC is the single most important document for import/export operations. Here is the complete guide.
Who Needs an IEC?
- Any person or business entity importing goods into India
- Any person or business entity exporting goods from India
- Businesses providing services where payment involves foreign exchange (service exporters)
Exceptions — IEC not required for: import/export for personal use (not commercial), government ministries and notified charitable organisations, import/export of certain agricultural commodities for personal consumption.
Key Facts About IEC
- IEC is linked to the PAN of the entity — each PAN can have only one IEC
- IEC has lifetime validity — no annual renewal required (only update if details change)
- No fee for first-time IEC registration from FY 2023-24 onwards
- Annual update/modification of IEC details (even if no change) is required between April and June each year
- IEC is mandatory for customs clearance at Indian ports (ICEGATE system)
Documents Required for IEC Registration
- PAN card of the entity (company, LLP, firm, or individual)
- Aadhaar card of the authorised signatory
- Active bank account with cancelled cheque or bank certificate
- Proof of business address (registered office proof)
- Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) for companies and LLPs
IEC Registration Process — DGFT Portal
Step 1: Go to the DGFT portal (dgft.gov.in) → Services → IEC → Apply for IEC.
Step 2: Register on the DGFT portal with your email and mobile number.
Step 3: Fill the IEC application form (ANF 2A) — entity details, PAN, bank account details, nature of business.
Step 4: Upload required documents in the prescribed format.
Step 5: Pay the application fee (nominal fee for modifications; first-time registration is free as of 2023-24).
Step 6: IEC is issued digitally within 1-2 working days in most cases — the e-IEC certificate is downloaded from the portal.
Linking IEC with GST and ICEGATE
For importers/exporters who are GST registered, the IEC is automatically linked to the GSTIN for the purposes of IGST on imports (paid through the customs system). All import clearances at ICEGATE (customs) use the IEC as the primary identifier. Service exporters must declare their IEC in RBI's Export Data Processing Organisation (EDPMS) system for receipt of foreign exchange.
